Ballantyne Mackay Consultants key areas of work include:

  • Market research, including desk research, business-to-business and customer research, attitudinal research, and staff surveys within organisations

Market Research

We provide a full market research service, providing clients with accurate information on the markets that they serve, on the needs and opinions of their customers, and on the attitudes of other groups with whom they need to ensure good communications - such as stakeholders, suppliers, or employees.

Through desk research, qualitative and quantitative research techniques, we are able to test the demand for products and services, assess customer attitudes, and the impact of current marketing activity.

Our combination of market research and marketing expertise means that, unlike most market research agencies, we are able to provide a wider interpretation of research data, by identifying the marketing implications that arise from the research, and making recommendations accordingly.

Research projects have included:

  • customer attitude surveys and staff attitude surveys for housing associations, economic development bodies, local authorities, professional institutes, retailers, IT and software developers, arts organisations, retailers, printers, FE Colleges, and universities
  • audience research for a wide range of arts companies covering many different art forms and including special collections
  • market research, customer profiling and segmentation, to develop a better understanding of the different customer groups and their needs, for major tourist attractions and for clients in the museums and galleries sector

Marketing Plans & Strategies:

Ballantyne Mackay Consultants have developed marketing strategies and plans designed to maximise impact in the market place for a wide range of products and services. We aim to provide strategies that are cost effective and appropriate to the needs and resources of our clients, particularly where the client is a small enterprise, or is limited by budgetary constraints.

We have particular skills in developing marketing plans and strategies for the public sector, academic institutions, and not-for-profit organisations.

Projects include Marketing Strategies for:

  • arts and leisure developments including visitor attractions, galleries, theatres, museums, and special collections and sports and community centres
  • educational establishments including universities, FE colleges, adult education organisations, education resource suppliers, independent schools and the education departments of arts organisations and visitor attractions
  • service providers such as health spas, membership organisations and professional bodies, local authority departments, housing associations, and business to business service providers

Feasibility Studies and Funding Bid Development

Through a combination of market research, marketing and business planning skills, Ballantyne Mackay Consultants are able to assess the potential of new developments, or the impact of existing projects.

We have considerable experience of working with clients on the preparation of funding bids from public sources. This may be through the preparation of one aspect of the bid (e.g. a Marketing Plan), or through preparation of the whole bid from feasibility study through to business plans, and the associated documentation.

Working with a group of highly experienced associates in the fields of property, design, architecture and concept development, we are able to consider all aspects of the project and its development.

Examples of our work in this area include:

  • proof of concept for a Forest Centre to provide accommodation and services for the forestry sector. The building will be a demonstration project for the timber industry, using renewable energy, high levels of insulation, adaptability and flexibility
  • development of a Lottery Bid to improve the intellectual and physical access to 30 sites across Perthshire. The project resulted in improved on-site interpretation, pathways and disabled access, along with restoration & conservation work
  • feasibility studies for a Scottish Freshwater Fish & Fisheries Management Centre, a country park, an orientation centre, a Scottish Tartans Museum and an Eco Park

Governance and Board Development Training

We provide board development training and boardroom facilitation for voluntary and not-for-profit organisations. This training is tailored for individual organisations and covers governance issues as well as best practice for directors of publicly funded organisations.

Our Principal Consultant, Fiona Ballantyne , delivers the Arts & Business Board Development Programme.
